The Museum closed on September 5, 2006 for major architectural renovations and is scheduled to reopen November 21, 2008.
Renovation Highlights:
- A state-of-the-art gallery will showcase the Star-Spangled Banner, the flag that inspired America's national anthem.
- A light-filled atrium will dramatically open the center of the building.
- A grand stairway will connect the first and second floors.
- Glass artifact walls lining the entrance corridors will display varied objects from the Museum's collections.
- A welcome center will provide orientation and a wide range of visitor services.
- Relocated elevators will improve access to the three exhibition floors and the lower level cafeteria.
- More rest rooms—including our four family rest rooms—will enhance building amenities.
- Relocated retail spaces will offer more convenience and choices.
- New air-handling, electrical, and information technology systems will updgrade building infrastructure.
