The Museum closed on September 5, 2006 for major architectural renovations and is scheduled to reopen November 21, 2008.

Renovation Highlights:

  • A state-of-the-art gallery will showcase the Star-Spangled Banner, the flag that inspired America's national anthem.
  • A light-filled atrium will dramatically open the center of the building.
  • A grand stairway will connect the first and second floors.
  • Glass artifact walls lining the entrance corridors will display varied objects from the Museum's collections.
  • A welcome center will provide orientation and a wide range of visitor services.
  • Relocated elevators will improve access to the three exhibition floors and the lower level cafeteria.
  • More rest rooms—including our four family rest rooms—will enhance building amenities.
  • Relocated retail spaces will offer more convenience and choices.
  • New air-handling, electrical, and information technology systems will updgrade building infrastructure.
