Museum Closed for Renovation The Museum closed on September 5, 2006 for major architectural renovations. The Musem is scheduled to reopen by fall 2008 with a light-filled atrium, a grand stairway, a state-of-the-art gallery for the Star-Spangled Banner, and new visitor amenities.
Book cover "The Star-Spangled Banner: The Making of an American Icon"
Book Release: "The Star-Spangled Banner: The Making of an American Icon" The dramatic story of the flag that inspired the national anthem—and of the Smithsonian's effort to save it for generations to come—is told for the first time in this new book in lavishly illustrated form. Released by Smithsonian Books, an imprint of Harper Collins Publishers, on June 24, the book is co-authored by current and former museum curators Lonn Taylor, Kathleen M. Kendrick, and Jeffrey L. Brodie, and features a foreword by Ralph Lauren.  In fall 2008, the newly conserved flag will be the centerpiece of the historic renovation and reopening of the Museum.
"Sounds of America" Celebrates Music of Texas The diversity of Texas musical styles resulted from a cross-pollination of sounds—what makes American music great. By borrowing tunes, passing on licks, and adopting new rhythms, Texas artists continue to create new traditions. Listen to these Texas tunes from the Smithsonian Folkways collections and enjoy a live celebration of Texas music during the Smithsonian Folklife Festival from June 25- 29 and July 2-6 on the National Mall.
